Great Cats And Magnificent Elephants

MEET THE CHARACTERS FROM DISNEY'S AFRICAN CATS and BORN TO BE WILD

Highlights from the “Great Cats and Magnificent Elephants” itinerary include a members-only visit to the Daphne Sheldrick elephant orphanage in Nairobi, as well as time spent in Amboseli, which is noted for its abundant and well protected elephant population sheltered by Mt. Kilimanjaro. The safari ends in the magnificent Mara Triangle which is where the filming took place for Disney’s African Cats.

Day 1 ~ Nairobi ~ House Of Waine

Upon arrival in Nairobi, an Extraordinary Journeys representative will greet you and take you to the House of Waine Hotel, where you will stay one night.

Located in this leafy suburb, House of Waine is a small boutique hotel that blends the elegance of gracious living with the spirit of modern Africa in an exclusive and serene setting. Each of the eleven bedrooms is individually styled: features include canopy beds, deep claw-foot bathtubs, and luxurious fabrics. A set menu allows guests two options for each course. Meals are served in a variety of settings, including the pool pavilion, lounge, terraces, or garden. There is a heated swimming pool and two bars reserved for the exclusive use of guests. House of Waine is a perfect choice for those that wish to experience Nairobi from a comfortable and serene distance.

Days 2/3/4 ~ Amboseli ~ Tortilis

You will be transferred to the airport in time for your 7.40 am scheduled flight to Amboseli National Park. Your chances of seeing the snow capped peak of Africa's highest mountain from your plane window are excellent in the early morning. You will stay three nights at Tortilis Camp.

Tortilis Camp lies on the edge of the Amboseli National Park. It is situated in a gentle hillside, sheltered by a natural forest of thorn trees with unbeatable views of the Amboseli plains across to Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru in Tanzania. The camp is a welcoming blend of rustic style and modern comfort designed to make the international traveler feel comfortable in Africa. The tents are all large and spacious, with king sized beds and elegant en suite bathrooms with steaming hot showers and modern toilets. They have a thatched roof over the top, extending to a large verandah, where you can sit and relax. Amboseli is an exciting and diverse game viewing destination and home to over 1,000 elephants, herds of wildebeest, lion and over 300 species of birds. Tortilis Camp offers a wide variety of activities ranging from early morning and mid afternoon game drives, guided game walks led by Maasai guides outside the park and sundowners. Alternatively, you can laze around the pool enjoying drinks and stunning views. The camp is positioned in one of Amboseli’s few remaining areas of unspoiled woodland providing the opportunity to witness the sunset on a hill where you can see miles across the park and feel like you are on top of the world.

Day 5/6/7 ~Maasai Mara ~Elephant Pepper Camp

Today you will fly at 9 am Amboseli back to Nairobi in time for your 10.00 am  flight to  the Maasai Mara.  Upon your arrival, your Extraordinary Journeys representative will be there to greet you and transfer you to Elephant Pepper Camp, where you will spend three nights.

Elephant Pepper Camp gets its name from the Warburgia Ugandensis tree, also known as the Elephant Pepper tree. This seasonal bush camp is in an excellent game viewing area and offers an authentic traditional Maasai Mara camping experience. Its eight spacious tents have en suite bathrooms with eco-friendly flush toilets and traditional safari bucket showers. The gentle glow of kerosene lanterns illuminates the camp at night as there is no electricity in tents. There is however, an area where batteries can be charged. Meals are served outdoors during the day or in the candlelit-dining tent. Come the evening, it’s time for chilled drinks and tall tales around the blazing campfire. Then, finally, a delicious dinner and a hot-water bottle to keep you warm in bed.

Day 8~ Nairobi ~ En Route To Europe/the US

In the morning you will be transferred to the airstrip for your 11 am flight to Nairobi. You will have lunch in Nairobi (not included), and have the option of visiting the Daphne Sheldrick and Giraffe Manor before heading out the airport for your evening flights.

Our Opinion:

This itinerary is great for first timer to Africa. We love Tortilis and Elephant Pepper Camp. We would recommend the trip to almost anyone, families or honeymooners.

Extraordinary Journeys is  celebrating Earth Day and the launch of two great new films shot in Kenya – Disney’s African Cats and IMAX’s Born to Be Wild – with the opportunity to experience the story behind the story! Each time this trip is booked, EJ Africa will adopt an elephant on your behalf. For more information: http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/asp/fostering.asp.
