The more you travel, the more interesting words you add to your vocabulary. Take dambo, for instance. It’s not something you notice on a menu and ask “what wine goes with the dambo?” Nor is it a musical instrument you learned to play in high school. It is a type of grassy wetland found seasonally in plateau areas and it makes up 12.5 percent of the land mass of Zambia. Birds, fish, and small animals are attracted to dambos, as they are to the huge riverine areas in the southern part of the country, but they have to share the latter refuges with their much larger avian, reptilian, and mammalian relatives. The list of world class game reserves is surprisingly long and their names—South Luanga, North Luanga, Kafue, Lower Zambezi, and more—are found in the journals of the most avid safari adventurers. Accommodations can be luxurious (think Luangwa House and Chongwe River House) and the Lower Zambezi game drives, walking tours, and canoe trips are among the best in Africa. |
