Description:

Zarafa (formerly Zibadianja) Camp, overlooking the Zibadianja Lagoon, is based on the premise that too much is just enough!  The camp evokes a sense of old-style luxury safaris with its four large, luxuriously appointed double or twin 'marquis style' tents. At a maximum of eight guests, the emphasis here is on individual hospitality and privacy. Each generous tent and veranda is positioned under cool and shady trees to emphasize the spectacular view. Your  living area comprises a spacious bedroom, en-suite bathroom, a copper bath and shower as well as outdoor shower.

The Zarafa Concession adjoins the Savuti Channel; this marsh has something of a mystical renown as it can dry up or flood regardless of local rains. David Livingstone, on his way to “discover” Victoria Falls in 1851, commented, that it was a "dismal swamp," but sometime around 1888 it started to dry up and remained completely parched until 1957. Camel thorn acacia trees established themselves in the channel and along the banks and grew to full size. During unexpected floods these trees were drowned but as the channel and marsh dried out again, the dead trees became one of the most prominent features of the landscape.  Aquatic animals, like hippos, still wander into the channel periodically, perhaps driven by a primordial migratory instinct.  This safari wonderland, which evolved from a combination of geography and climate over thousands of years, showcases a magnificent collection of flora and fau na.

Conservation & Community:

Zafara Camp is owned by Dereck and Beverly Joubert - award-winning filmmakers at National Geographic for over 25 years who have spent much of that time filming in and around theSelinda Spillway.

Their mission in life is conservation - and filming - as a means to show the stunning beauty and spiritually satisfying value of nature and, in particular, wild places in the world. Their filmsconsistently, yet subtly, talk about "the lessons we learn from the wild, about ourselves. These are often disturbing, lions hunt down a hyaena, the scene makes us look at what it is about hyaenas we don't like and what it is within us that rises to that question."
